The Power of Integration

Between Water and Energy

Egypt is the gate to African and Middle Eastern markets. Counting on its political stability, leadership, and trade agreements signed with African partners, its over 100 million population, and its unique location in the heart of the Middle East, Egypt is now the focus of the interests of multinational companies and international investors.

As the water business industry has a great deal of growth, it is worth saying that the Egyptian market witnesses a huge investment plan for the water industry. The government has drafted a water resources strategy that involves launching projects with a total capacity of 8.85 million cubic meters a day by 2050, of which a 3.35 million cubic meter first phase is planned by 2025.

63 desalination plants have been implemented in Egypt, with a total production capacity of 799 thousand cubic meters per day. Meanwhile, the number of stations being implemented is 19, with a total capacity of 375,000 cubic meters per day, at a total cost of EGP 7.9 billion.

The Bahr El Baqar plant has obtained the certificate of being the world’s largest water desalination plant, with a capacity of 64.8 cubic meters per second, and the largest sludge treatment plant in the world, as well as the largest ozone production plant.

The New Delta Station project is one of the giant projects for seawater desalination in the Al-Hamam area on the Mediterranean coast, with a total daily production capacity of up to 190 thousand cubic meters per day to cover the needs of the New Delta City of Alamein, provided that solar energy is used to provide the necessary electrical energy.

The total cost of the project exceeds $140 million, and it will be implemented to provide water to more than 1.5 million people. It is one of the newest and largest stations currently being negotiated.

One of the most important goals of the new Delta station is to provide water to the artificial river after treating groundwater and agricultural drainage at the Al-Hammam station to cultivate 2 million and 200 thousand acres in the Western Desert

Egypt is considered the energy hub of the MEA region. Renewable energy capacities at the end of 2021 amounted to about 63,787 megawatts, representing about 20% of the total electric energy in Egypt. 7,650 square kilometers for the establishment of new and renewable energy projects with a capacity of 90 megawatts (55 Megawatt solar energy + 35 megawatt wind energy).

The average speeds in the Gulf of Suez are about 10.5 m/s at an altitude of 50 meters, and the average speeds in the regions east and west of the Nile are about 7.5 m/s at an altitude of 80 meters.

The three most important wind farms:

The Jabal Al-Zayt Wind Farm (580 MW)

Zaafarana Wind Farm (545 MW)

A private-sector wind station in the Gulf of Suez with a capacity of (250 MW)

Stations under preparation (more than 2400 MW)

Since Egypt is located in the heart of the global solar belt, which is between 31.5 and 22 latitudes north, most of Egypt enjoys direct solar radiation between 2000 and 3200 kWh/m2 annually, with an average brightness of 10 hours per day (3600 hours per year).
There are existing stations (1763 MW):

Benban solar complex for photovoltaic cells with a capacity of 1465 megawatts.

A Solar thermal station in Kurimat with a capacity of 140 MW.

Photovoltaic cell station in Kom Ombo with a capacity of 26 megawatts, in cooperation with the French Development Agency

Stations under preparation (more than 1170 MW)

The Egyptian government has granted the “Egypt Green Hydrogen” company the golden license to produce green hydrogen in Egypt from a production plant with a capacity of 100 megawatts, which will be established in the industrial zone in Ain Sukhna, which belongs to the economic zone of the Suez Canal, at an investment cost of $135 million, according to what was seen by the platform Specialized Energy.
